HAVANA, CUBA'S CAPITAL

Welcome to Havana

Fly from London Heathrow to Havana via a quick stop over in Madrid with Air Europa.

Havana is the capital of Cuba. It is a very safe city and its historic old part, where most hotels are located, can be easily explored on foot. Havana's cathedral, Museo de la Revolucion, Obispo Street... there are so many beautiful corners to explore!

The Malecon or sea front promenade is connected to Old Havana through Paseo del Prado boulevard.

Not many people are aware but in Havana, you can also find stunning beaches in Playas del Este, which are located only 30 minutes away from historic old town.

Please find below a list of the most popular pre bookable excursions during your stay in Havana.

2
CAYO LEVISA ISLAND, A TROPICAL PARADISE

Two and a half hours by road from Havana, followed by a 30-minute boat transfer, you will find the most beautiful tropical island of Cayo Levisa. A true authentic paradise island surrounded by palm trees, mangrove and white sand, lots of white sand...

Cayo Levisa Island

Cayo Levisa Island

The accommodation consists in a reduced number of beach bungalows, all with air conditioning, comfy beds and showers but, pretty much basic.

There are three different types of bungalows, some fancier and more spacious that others and the difference in price between the different types of bungalows is tiny, the problem is the availability so early booking is highly recommended.

You can go on walks along the endless remote beaches of Cayo Levisa where you will fell you are on your own private island. There aren't any roads, no traffic, no bicycles.

Cayo Levisa has a main buffet restaurant and two A La Carte restaurants, all part of your full board meal plan.  There's very little entertainment and loud music. A stay in Cayo Levisa is mainly based on pure relaxation and switching off from daily routine.

3
VINALES VALLEY, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE TREASURE

Travel just under three hours by road West of Havana and you will be arriving in Vinales Valley, Pinar del Rio province.

Vinales Valley view from hotel Los Jazmines

Vinales Valley

Vinales Valley gives you a different perspective of Cuba. Here you will find yourself in rural Cuba, the land of farmers and "guajiros" ( local cowboys ).

Tobacco plantations, cigar factories, simple people, simple life... If you enjoy hiking or horse back riding through endless valleys, bird life, pure air... you are in the right place.

There are many lovely guest houses ( "casa particular") in the Valley as well as three basic hotels, being Hotel Los Jazmines our absolutely favourite place to stay since it is located on a hill overlooking the valley so either from your private balcony or hotel swimming pool, you will enjoy panoramic views that will be impossible to forget.

While in Vinales you can book different excursions such as bird watching guided walking tours, gentle horse riding with a local cowboy or a  visit to a cigar factory.

In Vinales town you will find a few authentic local bars with live salsa and many local restaurants where you can enjoy delicious meals ( including vegetarian ) for under £10 per person!

Cayo Levisa Island

Cayo Levisa Island is a tropical Caribbean island located 2 hours 20 minutes by road from Havana or 40 minutes by road from Vinales town, followed by a 30 minute boat transfer. This island has pristine white sandy beaches, palm trees, mangroves, humming birds, star fish, no all inclusive concept but full board basis. Beaches are practically empty, it is the opposite concept to the busy and often noise "All Inclusive" concept.

Best time to visit Cuba

Cuba’s weather is pleasant all year round (with an average yearly temperature of 25C) but in our view the best months to go are between March & June and November. Availability and prices are reasonable during these months (with the exception of Easter week) and the weather is just perfect. July and August can be very hot months and hotel availability may be complicated. Christmas and Easter periods are considered peak season. Hurricane season in Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean runs from June to November, with the fiercest storms typically blowing through in September and October.

Cuba for the Bohemian Traveller: hotel locations

All featured hotels in this package offer a five star location. In Havana, your hotel is located in the heart of Old Havana, within walking distance from bars with live music, a wide variety of local restaurants, Havana's cathedral, Malecon or sea-front promenade, Havana's Chinatown, Opera House and more.

In Vinales, Hotel Los Jazmines is located on a hill with breathtaking panoramic views of the Valley of Vinales. In Cayo Levisa, you will be in a tiny tropical Caribbean island with no roads, no bicycles, just white sand, star fish and palm trees. This island is only 30 minutes by boat from mainland, and only 45 minutes by road from Vinales town ( or two hours by road from Havana ).

What clothes to wear?

We recommend light clothes ( t-shirts and shorts preferably) and a light waterproof jacket. Don't forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and mosquito repellent. Vaccines are not compulsory for travel to Cuba although it is always best to double check with your doctor.

Cayo Levisa International Diving Centre is considered one of the top five diving centres in Cuba. Whether you are a beginner or advanced, you will be able to go on spectacular dives and admire the coral reef and tropical fish nearby.

Juan Sanchez from All About Tailor made Travel recommends:

"If this is your first trip to Cuba and you really want to relax but at the same time you want to see the authenticity of this beautiful country, then this tailor made suggested itinerary is ideal. Havana is definitely a must see. The city oozes charm and character everywhere you go to and you feel safe and free to walk anywhere you want to. You then move two hours by road and 30 minutes by boat and you reach a little known paradise island called Cayo Levisa. The beach bungalows are modest and the food is simple but good. If you are looking for five star accommodation then this is not the place but we definitely give it five stars for location location location. Vinales Valley, which is rural Cuba, again, is very near this gorgeous little island, 30 minutes by boat followed by 50 minutes by private transfer. Once again, Vinales is all about being in an authentic part of Cuba, far far away from the All Inclusive touristy resorts. The best place to stay in Vinales is at Los Jazmines hotel (room with Valley views) or La Ermita Hotel. For the independent traveller we offer accommodation at cozy casas particulares. These are becoming more and more popular, as one can read on Trip Advisor."
