Best time to visit South Africa
The best time to visit South Africa really depends entirely where your interest lies.
We have shortlisted the most visited places in the country such us Cape Town, Kruger National Park or Durban to help you with the planning of your holiday so you can enjoy the best possible weather during your trip to South Africa.
Cape Town & Western Cape
September, October, March and April are the best months weather wise to visit Cape Town and the surrounding areas as the South East wind is not blowing at these times of the year and the temperatures are very pleasant, so one can enjoy the many beaches in and around Cape Town such as Camps Bay beach, Clifton, Llandudno, Muizenberg and many others.
If you are planning to visit Cape Town during May, this month marks the end of the autumn season, temperatures are usually milder with slightly lower temperatures and the days start getting shorter. May can be hit or miss, you could have four seasons in one day, so it could be grey and rainy in the morning, warm and sunny in the afternoon and cold at night.
June, July and August are the winter months in South Africa. Cape Town and the Western Cape have cold wet winters and it starts getting dark from 6.30pm.
Wild Flower Season: it starts in August and lasts about four to five weeks when the semi-arid West Coast becomes a carpet of flowers, miles and miles of orange, purple, yellow and white fields. Most of the little towns in this area have wild flower shows over the Fridays / Saturdays and Sundays, each taking a turn and putting on beautifully landscaped arrangements of all the flowers growing in that specific area. The West Coast is said to have the most varieties of wild flower bulbs per square meter in the world. People flock to South Africa specifically for the wild flower season as the countryside is absolutely breathtaking and there are special wild flower tours which one can go on.
Kruger National Park
The best time to visit Kruger National Park is during the winter months of July, August and September in our opinion, as the grassland is brown as the land is dry and temperatures in the Game Reserve are not too hot. Malaria tables are usually not required at this time of the year but it is important to verify this information with your local doctor before travelling.
Game viewing is very good at this time of the year, especially around the water holes, as this is the dry season and because there is no rain the animals flock around these to drink and bath. September is spring time in South Africa and therefore the start of the breeding season. You could be lucky to see the animals with their babies around this time of the year.
Rainy season in Kruger National Park starts from October to approximately mid February. This period is summer in South Africa and the Kruger National Park falls into the summer rainfall area. It is very hot and humid during this time of the year, therefore malaria tables are required. Again, we highlight the importance of discussing this with your doctor before travelling.
Kwa-Zulu Natal: Durban and surrounding areas
Durban and the surrounding area is tropical, and a lovely time to visit is June, July and August which is the winter time in South Africa but the temperatures here are very mild, average 25C. One can swim in the warm beaches of the Indian Ocean. St. Lucia, Balito, Umdloti, Southbroom, Ramsgate, Margate are some of the best beaches in and around Durban’s Coastline. Many local South Africans from the Western Cape flock to Kwa-Zulu Natal and the South Coast during winter months to escape the rain and enable their children to swim and enjoy the winter school holidays.
Durban beach front was revamped just before the 2010 World Cup and has a wonderful sea front promenade with many restaurants, shops, an Aquarium, a Water World theme park and an iconic pier with a swanky restaurant with glass walls overlooking the Indian Ocean. Many upmarket hotels are on Durban’s beach front like Southern Sun Elangeni and Maharani or Southern Sun North Beach. Walk from Ushaka ( the Aquarium area ) right along the promenade where you can view local people displaying their beautiful sand art, etc… Durban sandy beaches are very safe for swimming as they are equipped with shark nets.
The rainy season in this part of the World is in the South African summer time from October onwards and the temperatures soar and the area becomes quite unpleasant and humid.
There are two major Big Five Game Reserves within a four-hour drive from Durban: Hluhluwe and Umfolozi, a definite highlight for those planning a trip to Kwa-Zulu Natal.
