7-day / 6-night self drive holiday to Iceland ( Golden Circle & South Coast )

Chase waterfalls, glaciers, wild beaches and the seasonal Northern Lights with this excellent value for money tailor made self drive holiday. Fly direct from either London Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester direct to Keflavik International airport. Collect your rental car on arrival at the airport and drive under one hour to Reykjavik for the night. Next morning, leave the capital and drive along the South Coast, enjoying the spectacular scenery. Along the way, stop at some of Iceland’s most dramatic waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi and Skógafoss. Before leaving Vik, a charming coastal village with just 300 inhabitants, visit Reynisfjara black sand beach but make sure you keep well away from the shore. This is Iceland’s most dangerous beach. Next stop, the Glaciers. Spend two nights at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon Hotel and enjoy Diamond Beach and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you can do ice cave tours, go hiking on a glacier or do a cruise around the Glaciers. Finally, drive towards Haukadalur Geothermal Valley in Golden Circle. Visit hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots, and geysers, including the famous Great Geysir and the active Strokkur. Visit Gullfoss Waterfall and Thingvellir National Park (about forty minutes away). Return to Reykjavik for your last night. We highly recommend to spend an afternoon relaxing at the Blue Lagoon just outside Reykjavik either on your first day after your 3 hour flight from London/Manchester or on your last day. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is a must so don’t forget your swimming costume and your water cover for your mobile phone on your self drive holiday to Iceland.

Reykjavik - Seljalandsfoss - Skógafoss - Vik
Leave Reykjavik in the morning and drive along Iceland's South Coast. Total driving distance: under 3 hours plus stop overs.

Along the way to Vik, stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you will able to walk behind this 60 meter waterfall. Make sure you wear water proof clothes and proper hiking shoes/boots. Walk a few minutes to nearby Gljúfrabúi, another waterfall hidden inside a gorge.

Before arriving in Vik, stop at Cape Dyrhólaey ( great view point ) and Skógafoss waterfall.

Spend a night at this charming hotel which has an outdoor hot pool and sauna perfect after a long day driving and exploring.

3
Vik - Skaftafell & Glacier Lagoon
Today, before leaving Vik, stop at nearby Reynisfjara Black Beach.

Please be aware of the danger at this location. Reynisfjara is Iceland's most dangerous beach because of its notorious sneaker waves.

Before reaching Skaftafell National Park you will drive through the black sands of Skeidararsandur. The sands serve as a gateway for the ever-changing glacier rivers.

For the more enthusiastic, Skaftafell offers plenty of hiking trails.

Consider joining a guided Glacier Walk or an Ice Cave Tour before heading further past the south side of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull, including Iceland’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnjukur 2.110 m / 6.923 ft.

Nested between the glacier and the ocean, one of Iceland’s most popular attraction, Joklulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, with its floating icebergs, is situated.

Make sure you also visit the Diamond Beach by the lagoon where the icebergs which fill the lagoon wash up on shore.

Return to the Klaustur area for an overnight.

Head back along the South Coast and visit the village of Flúðir. Here, you can take a detour and visit Þjórsárdalur valley, named after Iceland’s longest river, Þjórsá.

In the valley, dominated by the presence of Hekla volcano, you can visit Hjálparfoss waterfall, Stöng Viking farm and fairy tale like gorge Gjáin.

Back at Flúdir, consider taking a bath in Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, now branded as the Secret Lagoon.

Continue your journey to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. A few miles down the road you will encounter Geysir hot spring area where Strokkur erupts every 10 minutes.

Thingvellir National Park, Iceland’s most sacred historical site and home to the parliament of the Vikings, awaits you.
